SKA South Africa, a Business Unit of the National Research Foundation, is leading South Africa’s involvement in the SKA on behalf of the Department of Science & Technology. The SKA project is an international effort to build the world’s largest radio telescope, with a square kilometer (one million square meters) of collecting area. Since 2005, the African SKA Human Capital Development Programme has awarded close to 600 grants (2014) for studies in astronomy and engineering from undergraduate to post-doctoral level, while also investing in training program for technicians.
